Christians in Sport President Lord Mawhinney has died at the age of 79
Dr Brian Mawhinney served as an MP for over a twenty-five year period before joining the House of Lords in 2005.
Lord Mawhinney served in a number of senior political roles, including Transport Secretary in John Major’s cabinet and as Chairman of the Conservative Party.
His dedication to public service was profoundly influenced by his relationship with Jesus Christ and led to a strong, wide reaching influence in the public square.
In 2003 he was appointed Chairman of the Football League, a role he carried out with great diligence and success for seven years.
In 2007 as Chairman of More than Gold, he successfully led the strategy for UK churches as they engaged with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Lord Mawhinney was appointed President of Christians in Sport in 2012.
Graham Daniels, General Director of Christians in Sport said,
“Lord Mawhinney was a tremendous example that being the recipient of God’s love is inextricably linked to the calling to serve others. He was, and will remain, a role model to each one of us that Christians need to be at the heart of sports culture. We shall miss him greatly and are profoundly grateful for his inspiration and leadership”
