Dear Friends and Partners,
All of our lives have been impacted and are adjusting beyond our imagination due to the onset of Covid-19. What a comfort to depend on and look to our Father in heaven who is sovereign over all and “is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 42:1)
The first line of our internal staff culture document is:
“This is God’s work not ours. We work out a culture of prayerfulness to offer our thanks, requests and appeals to God; and, as we do, remind ourselves of our complete dependence on Him for everything. As performance-driven sportspeople who ‘back themselves’, we’re never too far away from giving lip service to this.”’
What an encouragement today that our Father in heaven reigns.
We exist to reach the world of sport for Christ and bring the gospel to bear in the lives of competitive and elite sportspeople, regardless of whether they are restricted from competing. For many, this time will be one of increased anxiety due to future uncertainty, loss of identity and the painful proximity of sickness if the pandemic increases as predicted.
In the coming days and weeks there is MORE reason for Christians in sport to be involved in the lives of their teammates, even if physically distant. To be a great friend and pray for opportunities to point them to the good news of Jesus Christ.
The work continues. We are adapting and adjusting to the new reality but committed to supporting sportspeople and equipping them to be engaged with their sports friends.
One benefit of the enforced isolation has been the availability of top level sportspeople to meet together to read the Bible. Already we’ve seen numbers from football, rugby union, tennis and track & field engage in virtual gatherings. Last night many more Young Performance Athletes gathered together to be encouraged from God’s Word and to pray.
We’re looking at what resources would most benefit sportspeople as we think about what questions they might have. We’ve already written a short blog and released a podcast, with more resources in the pipe-line. We’re also exploring a number of online gatherings for training and encouragement. If you have suggestions of resources which would help at this time please do get in touch.
We’re in discussions with schools and working on what happens if Sports Plus cannot run as normal this summer; including the potential of a virtual Sports Plus.
We’ll communicate further as clarity emerges. Do be joining us in prayer as we long to invest in the lives of young sportspeople this summer, whether in person or online.
If you currently only receive the Prayer Diary in the post we’d encourage you to sign up for our fortnightly prayer emails here or to find us on Prayer Mate as we’ll be able to update these prayers more regularly in the coming months. Do also keep an eye on social media to see all that is going on as we continue to reach the world of sport for Christ.
If you have any questions or concerns please get in touch. You can reach us on the usual office number, which is being diverted, or by email (you can find staff addresses here).
Please do let us know how we can be praying for you too.
