Train 1-2-1
Train 1-2-1

Whilst all competitive sport outside some elite contexts has been put on hold again, the new Government restrictions allow us to exercise with one other person in most of the UK and Ireland.

We have a resource to help you speak of Jesus at this time: we’re encouraging sportspeople to Train 1-2-1.

Say something of Jesus as you Train 1-2-1

Will you take part in Train 1-2-1?

What do I do?

It’s simple - just:

-Invite one friend to go on a run, a ride or a walk.

-Ask them three questions about the identity, mission and call of Jesus.

An example of what you may want to say could be:

‘Hey Ben, I’m a part of an organisation called Christians in Sport. They're asking sports people three questions about what sportspeople make of Jesus. You up for that?

You can see the questions below and download them to your phone if you want.

*If you want you could read them a specific claim of Jesus to discuss:

"I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."

John 10:10

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

John 14:6

“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die."

John 11:25

Top tips for using Train 1-2-1

How you ask your friends and engage them in these conversations will vary from person to person. At some point, all of us will face a point of ‘pain’ as we ask our friends questions of faith - we call it ‘crossing the pain line.’ It’s tough but needs to be done if we are to have meaningful conversations with our sports friends.

Two things you could do:

-Let them know about it when you invite them. As part of the invite you may want to ask a friend to do Train 1-2-1 and discuss some questions OR

-When you train, find the best moment to talk about the questions. It may be in the warm up or cool down or as you train.

Testimonials

In November, loads of people took up the challenge to Train 1-2-1 - here's how two people found it:

“I've tried speaking for years to my team mate about Jesus, but he's never been that receptive. As a result, I'd very much shied away from further opportunities to share the good news about Jesus with him. But with the launch of the Train 1-2-1 and a good amount of prayer, I felt both encouraged and confident enough to try cracking on again basing conversations around the suggestions that Christians in Sport had put forward in the 1-2-1 resources.”

Rich Kirtley

“We went on a run, got a pace that we could chat and then often I’d just ask them about, how they found lockdown, how they're finding the restrictions and not been able to play sport. I think lots of people are struggling with their sense of identity. We've not been able to train, and do everything that they normally do. And so off the back of that we could chat about something which is a bit deeper and more personal.”
